Falling Weight Impact Tester (Drop Weight) with Anti-Rebound System

The PolymerTest Falling Weight Impact Tester (Drop Weight) determines the impact resistance of thermoplastic pipes (PVC, PP) and profiles. It features a high-precision servo motor hoist (up to 2000mm) and a critical **Anti-Rebound System** to prevent secondary impacts, ensuring valid results. Supports both Staircase and Round-Clock methods in compliance with ISO 3127 and ASTM D2444.

Description

Introduction to Falling Weight Impact Tester (Drop Weight)

The Falling Weight Impact Tester (also known as Drop Weight Impact Tester) is the primary benchmark for assessing the impact resistance of PVC pipes, sewage fittings, and window profiles against sudden blows. In this test, a striker (tup) with specific geometry falls from a set height onto the specimen.

The model manufactured by Polymer Test maximizes safety and accuracy by eliminating operator intervention in height adjustment and weight release.

Critical Feature: Anti-Rebound System

In drop weight testing, if the striker bounces after the first impact and hits the sample again (secondary impact), the polymer’s molecular structure changes, invalidating the test results. This machine is equipped with intelligent sensors and a fast-acting gearbox that catches the weight immediately after the first rebound in mid-air, preventing any secondary strikes.

Test Methods and Smart Control

Via a 4.3-inch touchscreen, this device enables the execution of two main impact test methods:

  • Staircase Method: Automatically adjusts the drop height or weight in steps to calculate the Mean Failure Energy (MFE).
  • Round-Clock Method: Applies impacts to different points around the pipe’s circumference (at different “hours”) to check production uniformity.

Technical Specifications

  • Drop Height: Adjustable up to 2000 mm (2 meters) with 1 mm accuracy driven by a servo motor.
  • Sample Capacity: Features a robust V-Block support and clamping system to hold large pipes up to 630 mm diameter.
  • Striker Variety: Supplied with various standard strikers (D90, D25, D20) and calibrated weights.

Complete Pipe Laboratory Setup

To set up a standard pipe quality control laboratory, in addition to impact testing, you also need internal pressure testing. We recommend checking our Hydrostatic Pressure & Burst Tester (1-10 Stations) as a complementary product.

International Standards

The design of this machine complies with the requirements of the following standards:

  • Standard ISO 3127 (Thermoplastics pipes — Determination of resistance to external blows — Round-the-clock method).
  • Standard ISO 11173 (Thermoplastics pipes — Determination of resistance to external blows — Staircase method).
  • Standard ASTM D2444.
