DIN Abrasion Resistance Tester (Rotary Drum Method)

The PolymerTest DIN Abrasion Resistance Tester is the industry standard for evaluating the wear life of rubber products exposed to friction, such as tires, conveyor belts, and shoe soles. Utilizing a precision rotary drum covered with standard abrasive paper, it simulates accelerated wear. The machine offers versatile testing modes (rotating and non-rotating specimen) and calibrated weights (5N to 20N) to ensure strict compliance with ISO 4649 and ASTM D5963.

Description

Introduction to DIN Abrasion Tester

Abrasion resistance is the most critical quality parameter for products in constant contact with rough surfaces or the ground (such as automotive tires, safety shoe soles, and conveyor belts). The Rubber Abrasion Tester, also known as the DIN Abrasion Tester, predicts the service life of a component by simulating severe wear over a short period.

Operating Mechanism: Rotating Drum

The fundamental operation involves moving a rubber specimen across a rotating cylinder covered with standard abrasive paper. The technical features of the model manufactured by Polymer Test include:

  • High Motion Precision: The cylinder, with a diameter of 150 mm, rotates at a precise speed of 40 RPM to ensuring the abrasion rate is perfectly linear and repeatable.
  • Versatile Test Modes: The device can be set to both “Rotating Specimen” and “Non-rotating Specimen” modes to investigate specific wear mechanisms.
  • Variable Applied Force: Capability to apply vertical forces of 5, 10, and 20 Newtons using calibrated weights, depending on the rubber hardness.

Standard Sample Preparation

The accuracy of abrasion results depends heavily on the quality of the initial sample. Specimens must be cylindrical and fully cured. We consider the use of an Automatic Laboratory Hot Press essential for curing and preparing standard abrasion test specimens.

User-Friendly and Safe Design

  • Smart Interface: Equipped with a 5-inch color touchscreen for setting the abrasion distance and monitoring test status.
  • Safety and Cleanliness: Rubber abrasion generates fine particles and soot. This machine is equipped with a transparent Plexiglass Safety Shield to prevent particles from spreading into the laboratory environment.

International Standards

This device is designed exactly according to the requirements of the following reference standards:

  • International Standard ISO 4649 (Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic — Determination of abrasion resistance using a rotating cylindrical drum device).
  • Standard ASTM D5963 (Standard Test Method for Rubber Property—Abrasion Resistance).
