Digital Pendulum Impact Tester (Charpy & Izod) | 1-50 Joules

The PolymerTest Digital Pendulum Impact Tester is the ultimate solution for assessing the toughness and impact resistance of rigid plastics, pipes, and composites. Featuring a modular design with interchangeable hammers (1J to 50J) and an automatic electromagnetic release system, it performs Charpy, Izod, and Tensile Impact tests with high precision in accordance with ISO 179, ISO 180, and ASTM D256.

Description

Introduction to Digital Pendulum Impact Tester (Charpy & Izod)

The Pendulum Impact Tester is the ultimate benchmark for measuring “Toughness” and material resistance against sudden brittle failure. In industries such as pipe manufacturing, fittings, and automotive components, knowing how much energy a part absorbs before fracturing is vital. The machine manufactured by Polymer Test is a modular platform that enables a wide range of tests (Charpy, Izod, and Tensile Impact) using a single device.

Technical Features and Engineering Design

Impact test accuracy is heavily dependent on minimizing “Energy Loss” (friction). This device minimizes measurement errors through the following features:

  • Automatic Release System: The pendulum is released via a magnet and digital command, effectively eliminating operator hand tremors and initial vibrations.
  • Interchangeable Pendulums (1 to 50 Joules): The user can change the hammer and support vices depending on the sample type. This means you can test both thin plastic films and thick polyethylene pipes with one machine.
  • Center of Percussion Design: The pendulum arm is engineered so that unwanted vibrations are not transferred to the machine body, ensuring 100% of the energy is applied to fracturing the sample.
  • 4.3-Inch Touchscreen: Select test types (Charpy/Izod), calibrate, and view break angle and energy.
  • Internal Thermal Printer: Instantly print test results to attach to quality control reports (no PC required).

Importance of Sample Preparation (Notching)

Impact test results are only valid if the sample has a standard and precise “Notch.” Any error in the notch depth or radius will drastically alter the results. We strongly recommend using our Notching Machine (Charpy & Izod Sample Prep) to prepare samples before performing impact tests.

Covered Standards

This device is calibrated in accordance with the most stringent global standards:

  • Standard ISO 179 (Determination of Charpy impact properties).
  • Standard ISO 180 (Determination of Izod impact strength).
  • Standard ASTM D256 (Test Method for Determining the Izod Pendulum Impact Resistance of Plastics).
  • Standard ASTM D6110 (Test Method for Determining the Charpy Impact Resistance of Notched Specimens).
  • Standard ISO 8256 (Tensile Impact Method).
